Dear Peter - I am now 73. In 1943 I was 7 years old and lived a few doors away from a group of Polish Air Force Personnel, whom everyone thought of as Pilots, based at nearby Abingdon Airfield. These men were full of fun and always cheerful despite the ravages of war taking place in Poland. I have been trying to trace them, using UK archive material but to no avail. Anyway, I don't expect any of them to be around now, in view of their age; each must have been 19 up to 25 years old at that time, some 12 to 18 years older than I. However, I keep on trying! I have always held Polish people in high regard and that is no doubt the reason why I remember Zurakowski's demonstration of the 'cartwheel' in his Meteor at the Farnborough Air Show all those years ago. To say it 'astonished' the crowd, is an understatement - It frightened us to death!! What a great Pilot he was. Just thought I'd tell you all this - no reason!

I have known Mr. & Mrs. Zurakowski for many years. My husband and I have been vacationing at Kartuzy Lodge every year since 1986. When our son, Kuba, was born we continued to spend our vacations there. Kartuzy Lodge was not just a summer resort - it was a piece of Poland in Canada! For my son, it was like going to grandma and grandpa; it was like going to Poland. He spoke his first sentence on the beach at Kartuzy Lodge. Many of our friends and their children also spent most of their vacations in that increadible place. In the summer, the Zurakowskis were always busy with interviews etc. (their house was always inundated with journalists etc.). However, Mr.Zurakowski was very modest about his accomplishments and always seemed surprised why he was such a "celebrity". He had a quick mind, a great sense of humour, and was physically more active than many younger people. I'm so glad that I have had an opportunity to meet him and his family. My family and I will always have great memories of the summers at Kartuzy Lodge...We are greatful that Mrs. Zurakowska wrote "Nie tylko o Lataniu" - a book that summarizes her husband's life accomplishments as a pilot, husband, father, and grandfather. It is such a good read! Peter, thank you for setting up such a well organized and rich in content website regarding Mr. Zurakowski. Congratulations!

I remember Pan Jurakowski from my family visits to Kartuzy Lodge as a child. I used to play with the Avro model that he kept in the den of the main lodge. I was always enamored of aviation, but little did I know as a child that I was in the company of a legend of aviation. Currently I am the Chief Pilot for Bombardier Aerospace Wide Body demomstration group, based in Hartford, CT. I always speak proudly of having known Pan Zurakowski and his lodge from my childhood. And still look forward to visits to that beutiful part of the world with my young family.

Szanowny Panie Piotrze, Panska strona o Januszu Zurakowskim i samolocie Arrow jest niezwykle cenna szczegolnie dzis kiedy pozegnalismy wspanialego czlowieka i pilota. Pozdrawiam serdecznie, Pawel Henski Poznan, POLAND

This website is a fine tribute to a real hero, and to the nations he loved: Poland, Great Britain, and Canada. His service in the Battle of Britain and afterward helped save the world. As a test pilot, he was a consummate professional. As a person, he was a kind and erudite gentleman. He deserves our gratitude and admiration.

Dzieki za niezwykle interesujaca strone internetowa. Zycie i osiagniecia zawodowe Zurakowskiego sa niezwykle inspirujace, a dzieje zwiazane z mysliwcem Arrow niewiarygodne!! Super!

Good post about the Polish pilots Zurakowski, Szrajer and the V2 Rocket. Really interesting read. The Polish resistance really helped the allied war effort by capturing an intact enigma machine early in the war and working out how it work and this action you have described among others. They were did a great job for the allied war effort and helped a great deal in the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
